Guenther Steiner pinpoints why youthful F1 drivers are thriving below 2026 laws

Former Haas Formulation 1 group principal Guenther Steiner believes that the youthful era of drivers has tailored extra shortly to the brand new laws launched for the 2026 season.

Steiner defined that the youthful drivers do not have the years below their belts to develop dangerous habits, which he argued can also be giving present championship chief Kimi Antonelli a bonus over his skilled Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

“The important thing issue for me is how the younger drivers tailored to this,” Steiner defined on the Drive to Wynn podcast. “You see the entire younger drivers, they tailored higher than the seasoned drivers.

“Give it some thought, we have been all amazed however I feel it has to do with the expertise they simply adapt higher, they adapt faster and higher to new applied sciences as a result of they’re more energizing. They do not have many dangerous habits but which they’ve to vary.”

He added that rising up round extra expertise could have been advantageous for the youthful era of drivers.

“We even have to return to after they first began and that period of individuals got here in,” he continued. “All of us mentioned these are the blokes who grew up enjoying on the PlayStation, and so they now adapt extra to the vehicles with the sophisticated steering wheels and all that stuff.

“That is the following iteration of these guys. These guys are already… now I name them outdated. They’re clearly not outdated as a result of I am lots older than them, I do not wish to make them older than they really are, nevertheless it’s the following era.

“The whole lot is evolving. And when Max [Verstappen] and his era got here in, they have been known as the PlayStation drivers. They will use it. And that is the following era of drivers who can use this expertise so a lot better as a result of they grew up with extra expertise.”

Antonelli grew to become the youngest driver to steer the championship after back-to-back wins on the Chinese language and Japanese Grands Prix. Whereas Russell was the favorite heading into the season, the Briton is now below risk for the title by his team-mate.

Steiner as soon as once more pointed to the potential dangerous habits that may very well be hindering the 28-year-old driver.

“Going into the season, for me, George was absolutely the favorite, even earlier than testing as a result of it was George Russell’s second, however then what occurred now with these vehicles is that Kimi has no outdated habits, whereas George has to eliminate some habits.

“He drove the outdated automotive for fairly a very long time. And you are not speaking solely in regards to the energy unit with the EV energy and all that stuff, it is also that the aerodynamics are fully completely different.

“It is advisable to adapt, and for [Kimi], it is a lot simpler. He hasn’t received lots to return to. For him, all the pieces is new, and he does not must eliminate something. He does not must put effort into dropping some habits.

“He can go and drive the automotive whereas the opposite ones must get away from the bottom impact. The bottom impact isn’t there anymore. And I feel as a race automotive driver, when you have pushed the bottom impact vehicles for 5 years, it’s not which you can change from in the future to the following and say, ‘Oh, that is now completely different. I simply adapt to it.’ You all the time fall again to some habits.”
