The Metropolis of Vancouver, the federal government of British Columbia, First Nations leaders and the house owners of BC Place are working along with “non-public companions” to try to save the Whitecaps.
They issued a joint assertion on Thursday updating their efforts to maintain the MLS staff from relocating, maybe to Las Vegas. The non-public companions weren’t recognized.
Their objectives embody “enhancing the sport day financial mannequin at BC Place, exploring extra sponsorship alternatives, and advancing work on potential websites for a brand new stadium and growth.”
“Let’s be clear: Vancouver is open for enterprise. We’re doing every thing we will to maintain the Whitecaps right here, and we’re dedicated to constructing a long-term resolution that displays the dimensions, ambition, and world way forward for this metropolis,” learn their joint assertion.
On Might 1, The Athletic reported that there was a proper supply on the desk to buy the Whitecaps and transfer the staff to Las Vegas.
An investor group led by Grant Gustavson, the son of Kentucky billionaire Tamara Gustavson and grandson of Public Storage founder B. Wayne Hughes, submitted a bid to the league workplace.
The Whitecaps initially have been based in 1974 as a member of the North American Soccer League and have been later revived as an MLS franchise in 2009.
The staff has been up on the market since December 2024.
